"My hometown, Baoting, lies in the heart of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. Half of Hainan's beauty lies in its blue seas and skies, while the other half resides in its tropical rainforests," Lü Yan, an NPC deputy and vice-mayor of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County, in South China's Hainan Province, said during a group interview on March 12, prior to the closing meeting of the fourth session of the 14th NPC.
Locals are increasingly realizing a healthy ecology is a "golden rice bowl," Lü noted. "We have developed under-forest economies in the mountains ... The forest coverage rate in Baoting has remained stable, above 77 percent, and the air quality excellence rate has consistently stayed above 99 percent throughout the year," she said.
Lü believes the charm of Hainan's cultural and tourism industries lies in the deep integration of ecology and culture.
In response to the shift in tourist demand from "sightseeing" to "experience," she suggested there is a need to develop distinct products and improve service quality, to drive the transformation of the cultural and tourism industries from "selling resources" to "selling experiences." Additionally, she said she has paid close attention to various issues, including rural elder care and corporate-employee pensions.
Despite her busy official schedule, Lü always makes time to create short videos promoting Baoting's cultural and tourism resources, and showcasing the beauty of Baoting. Social-media platforms have built a "digital bridge" between Lü and the public, bringing them closer together. "When people are willing to reach out to us, it means they trust us," Lü says.
Throughout the past year, she has used social-media platforms to collect public opinions and suggestions, and to work with relevant departments to address livelihood issues.
This has turned "online voices" into "offline results," and has strengthened the foundation of trust between cadres and the public, she says.
