Women's Power in Rural Development Report Includes STEM Girls' Research Results

 2025-01-23

The 2024 Sci-Tech Empowering Rural Transformation Report: HER Power, HER Stories, compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in China, the United Nations Development Programme in China, and the China Internet Information Center, was released during the recent International Forum on SciTech Empowering Rural Transformation.

The report focuses on the practices of women in China, and other developing countries, in empowering agriculture with science and technology.

Results of a research project, conducted by participants of the STEM Girls program, under China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF), were included in the report. The participants designed a radio frequency identification device, applicable in cold-chain logistics, under the guidance of a team from Tsinghua University.

STEM Girls, launched in 2018 with support from Samsung China, is a public-welfare program that benefits girls between the ages of 12 and 16. Divided into several phases, the program provides online courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

The program helps girls conduct scientific research, inspires their interest in science, and encourages them to include sci-tech-related jobs into the planning of their future careers.

To date, the program has provided more than 7,000 girls with opportunities to participate in scientific research conducted by China's renowned universities and institutions.
