The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), China Association of Women Judges, China Association of Women Procurators, China Association of Women Lawyers (under the All-China Lawyers' Association), and the Women Workers' Committee (under the All-China Federation of Trade Unions [ACFTU]) on March 27 released the list of China's Top 10 Women and Children's Rights Protection Cases.

Tan Lin, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of ACWF, Hu Yunteng, Justice of China's Supreme People's Court, and Shi Dai, Member of the Secretariat of ACFTU, presented certificates to the judges, lawyers and/or officials from women's federations and federations of trade unions, at all levels in different regions of the country, who handled the cases.

The purpose of the event was to promote gender equality, an important principle of China's Constitution, and to encourage women to respect, study, observe and use the law (to protect their legal rights and interests). The event was also intended to motivate law enforcement agencies, various organizations and people from all segments of society, across the country, to work together to protect women and children's rights and interests.

The four organizations selected the cases from among 72 cases collected by ACWF and its member organizations during the past year. The review panel (composed of judges from China's Supreme People's Court, procurators from the Supreme People's Procuratorate, lawyers, officials from

ACWF and ACFTU and scholars from universities and social research institutions) nominated 20 candidates. The list was eventually whittled down to the 10 cases. The selection of the cases highlighted the achievements of law enforcement agencies, people's organizations and social organizations in working together to protect women and children's rights and interests in recent years. Some of the cases involved domestic violence, sexual abuse of children, debt obligations of spouses, division of property in divorces, rural women's land- related rights, women's rights in childbirth and provision of women employees' maternity insurance. The proper handling of the cases not only enables the parties concerned to receive justice and benefit from equality, but it also helps guide law enforcement agencies, especially as they handle cases involving infringements of women and children's rights and interests.
